Most people I have met who have been to Budapest, have been surprised by how amazing the food was. It is definitely a cuisine that would deserve more recognition, as food is the heart and centre of Hungarian culture. There is not a single event or occasion where food isn’t involved. So, it only makes sense that those who visit this beautiful country crave more of the food well after they left. Rightfully, the capital is packed with tasty food spots, from affordable bakeries to fancy rooftop bars, Budapest really is your culinary oyster. So, in today’s post I am bringing you some of the best places to eat and drink in the Hungarian capital.

One of my favourite spots in Budapest, Twentysix Budapest connecting nature with city life

As always it is a mix between trendy brunch spots, rooftop bars and traditional food, some of them may not be obvious choices but I always try to keep things interesting as you know.

Vaj Bakery

There are a few scattered around the city, this bakery can also serve as a brunch spot. Lots of fresh bakery products to choose from in the morning. Perfect if you want to grab a light bite before your exploration.

Calm before the storm of customers

Artizán

If you go to Hungary, you will notice that there is a huge culture of bakeries there. You will be find some of the most popular chains or local ones on every corner. Artizán bakery is one of them that offers delicious sourdough bread and pastries. Another option that has multiple branches in the city and is perfect for on the go.

Polo Pub

You might be surprised why this place landed on my list, but the menu is actually filled with traditional Hungarian dishes and the prices are affordable. If you want to try local dishes in a warm and cosy atmosphere, I can highly recommend this spot.

High Note Sky Bar

This is one of the fanciest rooftop bars, and at peak times it will be hard to find a table. I would recommend going early/mid afternoon when it’s not busy yet, because with the view of St. Stephen’s basilica you will probably want to take some nice pictures.

Early afternoon is probably a best time to visit. And you will be happy to learn that the roof is open even in winter times, when you can stay in igloos

Leo Rooftop bar

There are lots of rooftop bars to choose from in the city, this one has a beautiful view of the river and bridges. The food is also delicious, if you want to dine in, not just visit for cocktails.

Not a bad view if you ask me, but to have the best time I would recommend visiting on a weekday of you can

Villa Bagatelle

If you want to feel like you just travelled back in time to the early 1900’s, you will love the atmosphere of Villa Bagatelle. If the weather allows it, you can sit in the outside garden area while enjoying a delicious brunch.

Twentysix Budapest

An urban jungle. If you love open-plan interiors filled with plants paired with great food and nice cocktails, this is a must visit spot in the city. Top tip, even if it's cold outside you can wear. a dress in here because the temperature is kept at 26 degrees Celsius to keep the plants thriving. Hence the name.

The garlic prawns were my favourite on the menu

Déryné

This one is located on the Buda side of the city and offers a variety of traditional Hungarian dishes and international ones. The interior is beautiful and often there is live music. It is not only the menu, but also the atmosphere that made me want to add this spot to my collection.

Tereza Mexican Restaurant

Okay, not exactly Hungarian cuisine, but I had to add this one for the atmosphere. Tereza is a Mexican restaurant in the centre of the city, so if you’re wondering round this can be a great lunch or dinner option if you love Mexican food. I would only recommend this option in good weather though, when the garden is open and full of people enjoying their food and evening.

Aranypinty

A little boutique cafe with lovely atmosphere and less tourists. Another place I would recommend for breakfast or brunch. The only downside is that there are only about 5-6 tables, so I would recommend booking one just to be on the safe side.

Törökméz

If you are looking for a cozy brunch spot, I can highly recommend Törökméz. Here you can enjoy different menu options including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free choices, making it the ideal brunch spot for anyone.

I can personally recommend the Turkish eggs :)

Franziska

You will be able to find one of these in Buda and the other one is Pest, so no matter which side of the river you decided to stay at, there will be one close by in the central area. Another great health conscious option for breakfast and brunch.

360 Rooftop bar

Another rooftop bar, which has a little bit more laid back and less luxurious atmosphere than the ones I mentioned before, but still offering great views.

Sir Lancelot Medieval Restaurant

This is an experience. If you love medieval times, stories and games I would highly recommend booking a table here. The food portions are generous, and you get to enjoy a medieval show while dining.

+1

I want to add another spot to this list that I haven't been able to try personally but heard amazing things about, Szaletly. This restaurant is actually a little bit outside of the tourists zone, so kind of like a hidden gem for now. It serves traditional Hungarian dishes with a twist, using fresh and local produce. The beautiful interior is also worth a mention. A must try for me too when I next return!
