Compared to England or Scotland, Wales gets significantly less tourism and attention which is a shame, as it’s full of hidden gems and natural beauty to be discovered and explored. From gorgeous waterfalls through breathtaking coastlines to enchanting castles, this has to be one for those who love nature, folklore and magic. If you are after hidden gems that not many people have heard of internationally, Wales should be your next travel destination, and here are 3 reasons why.

3 reasons why Wales (the land of hidden gems)
Wales, the land of natural beauty and hidden gems

Before we dive in, I want to share something that’s been a game-changer on my own (often solo) adventures — my free Travel Wellness Routine Builder.

It’s a soulful toolkit designed to help you stay centred, confident, and grounded on the road, with morning rituals, emotional self-care prompts, and a printable checklist to keep travel stress-free.

Because when you feel good within, every trip becomes even more transformative.

It is the castle capital of the world

Wales is often called the “castle capital of the world” because it has the highest density of castles per square mile anywhere. It has around 600 castles, many of those are still standing strong and welcoming visitors on a daily basis. This high number comes from Wales’ turbulent medieval history, with constant battles between Welsh princes and invading Normans/English. One of the most accessible choices would be the Cardiff Castle, found in the Welsh capital city. But if you have more time and a car to drive around, I would definitely recommend visiting those that are more remote.

It is a must for anyone who loves to spend time outdoors.

The Welsh countryside is so versatile and has many wonders. I have been lucky enough to visit many of its hidden gems, from waterfalls to secret beaches and epic hikes, I would actually struggle to pick my favourite. Anyone can find something they love, whether that's taking a long beach walk, having a picnic by a waterfall or climbing peaks like Pen y Fan, the highest point of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Travelling through the Welsh countryside makes you feel like you have just entered the world of LOTR, it is magical and enchanting. If you are the outdoors loving traveller, Wales has. a lot to offer to you. I won't even try to put its beauty into words, let some photos speak for me.

It is not that touristy (yet)

Expect for a few very popular beaches in the summer time, or a well-known waterfall on the weekend, I rarely see tourists (especially international) in Wales. There are lots of places that, if you end up visiting, you can basically have to yourself. Compared to how many wonderful things you can can find and visit, Wales is so quiet and tranquil. So, if you are looking for places to visit that have less crowds, I would definitely add it to my bucket list.

Wales may not get as much attention as England or Scotland, but that’s exactly what makes it so special. From being the castle capital of the world, to its enchanting countryside and peaceful, crowd-free charm, it’s the perfect destination for travellers who want magic, history, and nature all in one. If you’re dreaming of hidden gems that feel untouched and authentic, Wales should be at the top of your list.
