I have to start with a confession; this beautiful island wasn’t always on my travel radar, but as soon as I learnt more about it, I knew I had to visit it. I secured a trip back in 2022, and since it has gained more attention among European travellers. But when it comes to popular travel destinations worldwide, it is still kind of a hidden gem. When someone visits Europe, Madeira may not be on the top of their travel list, but given how magical this place is, I would strongly recommend adding it. And to convince you, in today’s post I listed 3 reasons to visit Madeira, Portugal as always paired with lots of photo evidence.

The weather

Especially if you’re looking for a milder, warmer winter escape in Europe, Madeira is an ideal destination. With its sub-tropical climate, the weather stays mild all year round. Even during the winter months, you can get some sun and temperatures around 19-20 Celsius degrees. I ended up visiting end of Feb/early March and all I needed was a warmer jumper/jacket for the evening breeze. There are banana and palm trees everywhere you look, and the food markets offer fresh produce like passion or dragon fruit all year round.

Nature is next level

Even if you’re not the hiker type, you’re going to enjoy spending time on this island. Madeira is called the Hawaii of Europe, rightfully so. It has volcanic origins and incredible mountain and coastal views. It is lush and green all year round which makes you want to spend all day outdoors. From waterfalls and volcanic pools to epic cliffs and forests, there is so much to discover, you set the pace. As always I have brought you lots of photos to show you why this subtropical island should be your next travel destination. If you are short on time I would recommend booking a local day trip where they drive you around the island, showing you some of the most breathtaking views/attractions. This can also be a great way to explore the island if you don't want to rent a car.

It’s reasonably priced

Compared to other European destinations, Madeira is still well priced, especially considering the experience and value you get for your money. Budget airlines fly there from major cities like London, Paris or Lisbon. In my opinion it is the most exotic place you can reach from Europe in a short duration flight and with budget airlines. So, if you happen to be in (especially Western) Europe, I would definitely add it to my list.

why visit Madeira
Dining solo won't break the bank, this one is a Madeira special, white fish with banana and passion fruit, it may sound odd at first, but it actually works
where to stay in Madeira
Funchal, the capital of Madeira can be a great spot to stay at, and do day trips to explore the rest of the island

Additionally, you may be wondering about safety and whether Madeira is ideal for solo travelling. I can't fully speak on this matter from personal experience, as I only did part of this trip solo, but I had a safe and comfortable trip during the whole time, even when I was wondering around alone. Portugal is considered to be solo travel friendly in general (I explored many parts of it alone), so I would happily go back and explore more of Madeira solo too. The locals are kind and helpful, everyone seems to speak English, especially in touristy areas.

I hope that this list made you consider booking a trip to Madeira. I can promise you, you will not be disappointed. It is full of wonders, amazing food and kind people. Especially if you are looking for a place that is full of opportunities for active relaxation, this is the best of the best.
