The Baltics is a geopolitical term, used to describe three countries: Lithuania (capital city: Vilnius), Latvia (capital city: Riga) and Estonia (capital city: Tallinn). These three countries are located in Northern Europe, on the coast of the Baltic see. The first one I visited was Estonia back in 2018, and I loved how quiet and tranquil even the capital was during peak European travel season. I was looking forward to visit the other two Baltic countries, and once I did, they did not disappoint. By the end of my trip, I was convinced that these countries may be some of the most underrated destinations in Europe. So, in today's post I will share exactly why you should add them to your bucket list!
They are affordable
When visiting the Baltic regions you won't have to compromise on the quality of your experiences, all three countries sit within the budget-friendly category. Especially when comparing these to more popular European destinations, you will find that your money goes further. Even exploring all three of these countries in one go isn't that crazy of an idea, as travelling between them is easy and affordable with local airlines. I think you will find the local prices refreshing after travelling in Western Europe!

A rich blend of history and culture
From Tallinn's medieval old town through Vilnius's baroque charm to Riga's Art Nouveau buildings, the Baltic region is filled with magic, beautiful architecture and rich culture. My personal favourite is Riga, with its beautiful architecture it really stole my heart. If you are looking for that European fairytale atmosphere with cobblestone streets and lively colours, but without the crowds, you will love this part of Europe. These countries are similar, yet each have their unique characteristics. Christmas is a specifically great time to visit as they all offer incredible Christmas markets and the atmosphere is amazing! I actually visited Latvia and Lithuania in December and I was very impressed. Vilnius goes all out especially around this time of the year.

One of the safest places in Europe, especially for solo female travellers
Although I did not visit these countries alone, I can definitely vouch for how safe and comfortable I felt during all these trips. I would happily return solo to see more of them. All three of these countries are compact, easy to navigate and walkable, making them a perfect solo travel destination. The public transport systems in the capitals are easy to use, and almost everyone speaks a good level of English. As with any destination, you’ll want to stay aware of your surroundings and be mindful in busy nightlife areas, but incidents are rare. Whether you’re wandering through medieval old towns, taking scenic coastal walks, or hopping between cafés, the Baltics offer a secure and comfortable environment for solo adventurers.

Whether you’re drawn to fairytale cities, peaceful coastlines, or the freedom of safe and easy solo travel, the Baltics offer an experience that feels both refreshing and unforgettable. This underrated corner of Europe rewards curious travellers with authenticity, beauty, and a sense of discovery that’s hard to find elsewhere. If you’ve been searching for a destination that surprises you in all the best ways, the Baltics might just be your next great adventure.
