Bari, Italy
Such an underrated Italian, coastal city that is ideal for short trips. Many budget airlines offer direct flights to Bari, making it the perfect destination for a long weekend trip. Getting from the airport to the city centre is easy and doesn’t take long at all. If are longing for a long weekend filled with delicious Italian food, beautiful, coastal scenery and vibrant city life, you will love Bari!

Bucharest, Romania
I specifically wanted to add this European capital to the list because of its spa centre, Therme. Since it is located just a short Uber ride away from the airport, even a short 24hrs trip would make sense if you happen to find an early flight in the morning and a late one in the evening. If you are looking for a relaxing spa holiday for a day or two, Bucharest deserves your attention.

Porto, Portugal
I like to think of Porto as Lisbon’s little sister, but since it’s a bit more compact and there are less attractions to explore, it can be ideal if you’re short on time. Most things to do and see are walkable, making this the obvious choice for a short, weekend trip.

Tirana, Albania
While the Albanian countryside offers millions of things to do and see (and as a result isn’t ideal for a short trip), the capital itself is compact, walkable and perfect if you’re short only have a few days to explore. In fact, Tirana can be explored and enjoyed in 24hrs, and in case it sparked some curiosity, you can read my one day guide here.

Vilnius, Lithuania
If you only have a day or two to escape, the Lithuanian capital is a top contender to consider. Especially, if you looking for a charming, cobblestone street filled and cozy city. Most of the things you want to see and explore are within walking distance, and if you’re interested I have curated a slow paced, one day itinerary. Check it out here.

Valencia, Spain
One of my favourite places in Valencia, and one that is ideal to visit whether you have 2 days or 2 months. There are things to do and see, but Valencia has a laid-back, coastal city vibe, that you won't feel overwhelmed or pressured to tick everything off the list. The city centre itself isn't huge either, so you can easily explore it on foot. If it caught your attention, make sure you read my ultimate travel guide for this vibrant, Spanish city!

Sofia, Bulgaria
If you’re looking a low-key destination with amazing food spots to enjoy for a day or two, Sofia should be on your radar. The Bulgarian capital is filled with cozy cafes, affordable fine dining restaurants and trendy brunch spots. I was so impressed by the food scene of Sofia, that I collected my 10 favourite spots across the city for you to check out.

Valletta, Malta
One of my favourite capital cities in Europe, and one of the most underrated one too. While other Mediterranean cities likely to appear on social media, Valletta is quietly waiting for those who are looking for a sunny escape in Europe, even if they’re short on time. Given the size of this city, everything to see and explore can be easily done by walking around. Many of its little alleys and streets are car free, making it an ideal city to explore at a slow, wandering pace.

Riga, Latvia
Another Baltic capital city that made it to the list. Besides being compact and easy to navigate, Riga is also a perfect destination if you’re looking for a more underrated and affordable spot in Europe. Riga can easily be explored in 2-3 days at a relaxed pace, without feeling under pressure to do and see as much as you can. On top of the cozy streets, beautiful architecture and vibrant colours, Riga also has great food spots, so make sure you checkout my food guide to Riga before you book your flight!

Perugia, Italy
Last, but not least, allow me to close this blog article with another Italian city, Perugia. After visiting most of the bucket list places in Italy like Rome, Venice or Florence, I am always happy to find more underrated and relaxed places to visit in Italy. In my opinion there are much better options for food and culture, because they are less mainstream. These are also better places if you are short on time, but are looking for a dolce vita holiday. Perugia had amazing scenery that resembles Florence, but without the overwhelming amount of things to do. It is easily accessible even by budget airlines, making it the perfect choice for a short city break.
And this brings me to the end of my list of the 10 best European destinations that are perfect for a short trip. Europe is so diverse, yet compact, everyone will find something that speaks to them.
